A Typical Day in Critical Care
Thinking about joining us as a Resident Doctor in Critical Care at Spire Nottingham? Here’s what a typical day looks like — and why our team find it a rewarding place to work.
Structured Consultant Support
You won’t be left to figure things out alone. Our consultants conduct two dedicated ward rounds each day, and are always available between rounds for advice, escalation, or teaching. Every patient receives a daily review, ensuring continuity of care and giving you regular opportunities to discuss clinical decision-making with experienced intensivists.
Your Role on the Unit
As a Resident Doctor, you’re a central part of the team. Your day-to-day responsibilities include:
Supporting the nursing team with clinical tasks and medical oversight. Responding to deteriorating patients on the ward — you’re the first medical responder when a patient’s condition changes. Contributing to daily patient reviews alongside consultants. Carrying out procedures and interventions appropriate to your level of training and experience.
Time to Develop
One of the things our Resident Doctors value most is the breathing room. The workload is manageable, and when clinical demands allow, there’s genuine time for private study, audit, quality improvement projects, or working towards your CPD goals. We actively encourage this — it’s built into the ethos of the role, not something you have to fight for.
The Environment
Spire Nottingham’s Critical Care unit is a modern, well-equipped facility. The case mix is varied — from elective post-operative patients requiring close monitoring to unplanned admissions needing urgent critical care intervention. It’s a supportive environment where you can build confidence, consolidate skills, and develop as a clinician.
